Phone Booth

A NYC public relations man is held hostage in the city's last free-standing phone booth by a mysterious caller who threatens to shoot just about anyone he sees.

At only 80 minutes in length, Phone Booth is a tight wound suspenseful glimpse of a very bad day for an average guy. While we never learn the perpetrator's motives, I don't feel that is all that important. We do learn much about Stu, the PR guy who is held hostage by a phone call. He proves to be one of the more interesting characters in recent film drama. Even after the episode is over, he might say that he learned an awful about about himself and he may even be glad it happened.

Aside from the cerebral interest, there is also a pretty interesting hostage situation. The cops, passers-by, Stu's wife, a young female friend, and his overworked intern all converge on Stu. And it really is all about Stu and his reactions to these people within this situation.

While I would welcome a sequel to Phone Booth that featured the same villain, I don't think the character depth and intrigue obtained here will be equaled.

Directed by Joel Schumacher.
