A young couple stages a prison break and takes a police officer hostage in an attempt to retrieve their baby from a foster home.

Based on actual events, The Sugarland Express is part comedy, part action and part drama. An interesting cast of believable characters fill a nice script. Spielberg's directorial debut isn't a master achievement in the art, but he did end up with a rather good and very entertaining film.
