Jonathan met Sara "a few years ago" while shopping for Christmas gifts in New York City. Although they share a wonderful Manhattan evening together, Sara insists that that if they are meant to be together that fate will intervene and they'll find a way back into each other's life.
"A few years later", both are engaged to other people and begin searching for fate to intervene.
A basic mix of charming leading actors and their offbeat best friends. John Cusack seems to have a high appeal to both men and women and Kate Beckinsale (Pearl Harbor) is fast climbing the charts as America's favorite Brit girl (Gwyneth who?).
The script isn't all that wonderful and the directing is fine, but it's those darn lovable characters in a darn interesting situation that make this movie sail. (would-be filmmakerstake note) It's a fine film that surely will enjoy a long run as America's favorite date movie.
Earned a TOP PICK award more for audience appeal and less for techniqual brilliance.
The only thing that left me a little uneasy was how Jonathan and Sara's fiancees were treated. Sara's guy was a self-absorbed weirdo horn player but, Halley, Jonathan's would-be bride was sweet as can be and she got totally screwed! Maybe Miramax will see its way to making a spin-off film: Halley's Best Revenge...well, its just a thought.
