After their storied courtship, Shrek and his new wife return to Far, Far Away to meet Fiona's parents. It is soon discovered that there are those who are not happy about Fiona's choice for a husband and a magical plan is hatched to break them up.
A charming, perhaps more traditional fairy tale story, than the original blockbuster. There are few new characters here; Fiona's parents, voiced by Cleese and Andrews are pretty vanilla and don’t add to the enjoyment much. But Puss in Boots, a small cat with delusions of grandeur voiced by Antonio Banderas, is quite funny and delivers many laughs. There is also a fairy godmother, played by Jennifer Saunders who sounds like and (even looks like) Debbie Reynolds.
There's a lot to like about Shrek 2. The street scenes of Far, Far Away are a feast for the well-trained eye with humorous signs and shop names throughout. Donkey (Murphy) again often steals the show. And there is a relationship between Shrek and Fiona that both grows and warms the heart.
The overall experience, mostly due to several new characters that add little to the fun, detracts Shrek 2 from living on par with the original, but it is still very enjoyable and the perfect family picture.
