Catch Me If You Can

DiCaprio is Frank Abagnale Jr., a young man who leaves home and takes on various personas while bilking banks out of millions in counterfeit checks. All the while he is pursued by an agent form the FBI (Hanks).

Based on a true story and taking place in the late 1960's, this picture has a quiet style that is rather pleasing. Spielberg lets the script and actors take over the momentum of the story here. He uses nice photography and frame composition without over-directing the film. This direction style coupled with John Williams' bouncy score really creates the mood of the piece and keeps it going.

Frank Abagnale Jr. proves to be an interesting character, wishing to please his parents and sending up signals that he wants to stop running. FBI agent Hanratty gives us glimpses into his personal life that may lend to his sense of job dedication but we could stand to know a bit more about him. By far the most interesting character here is Frank Abagnale Sr., played wonderfully by Christopher Walken. Considering his brief screen time, we know an awful lot about this man and what possible influence he has had on his son. Walken should receive Oscar consideration here.

I largely enjoyed the rest of the supporting cast as well, especially Amy Adams' even performance as Abagnale Jr's eventual fiance.

There's a nice symbolic theme throughout the film, underscored by the thought that, "The Yankees win every year, not because they have Mickey Mantle; but because the other teams are too busy looking at the pinstripes."

Not the suspenseful cat and mouse thriller you might be expecting; but a smallish gem that pleases more cerebrally.

Directed by Steven Spielberg.
