A young black woman struggles for self-determination while under the lordship of a ruthless husband in the early 1900's. Based on the Alice Walker book.
A wonderful human drama that is performed with excellence and directed with grace. There were those who doubted Spielberg's ability to properly portray the Walker novel on the big screen; but most agree he pulled it off very well. In her film debut, Whoopi Goldberg gives arguably the best performance of her career. Since its 1985 release, this story of struggle and triumph, of drama and humor has become an anthem for the black community; and a respected film for all movie lovers.
Directed by Steven Spielberg. |
