Will Hunting (Damon) is a young janitor at MIT. When he solves an incredible math problem, he's taken under the wing of a pompous professor. When the boy proves a difficult apprentice, he is sent to a stern, but compassionate, psychologist (Williams) to help him find his way.
One of the best pictures of the year. It is probably as good as everyone says it is. Will's embattled and self-destructive behavior is at the heart of the script. There's a wonderful love story and his relationship with the psychologist is a stark development of both characters. Also of interest are Will's friends. They are another aspect to the lead character and provide a bit comic relief as well. An Oscar underdog that faired pretty well.
Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor (Williams) and Best Original Screenplay (Damon & Affleck)
Directed by Gus Van Sant.
