After losing their son, an Irish couple relocates their two daughters to New York City in hope of a better life and as an escape from their grief.
A soulful drama that both feels good and may induce a tear or two, In America assembles a small but memorable cast highlighted by a pair of real-life sisters, Emma and Sarah Bolger. As the young on-screen sisters in In America, they are at the very heart of the story and are gentle, natural and fun to watch. Djimon Hounsou pleases, too as a scary neighbor the girls come to love.
This could have easily slipped out of hand and become a bad tragedy. But everything comes together nicely and forms a memorable family-oriented drama.
Nominated for three Oscars.
Directed by Jim Sheridan.
