While
visiting Japan, an American actor strikes
up a friendship with a neglected young
wife.
Murray and Johansson give stellar lead
performances in a script that is tight
and rife with nice dialogue and quirky
characters. What makes the movie are the
starkly different yet parallel lives of
the main characters. One is a young wife
who is very much in love with her husband
but he is often too busy for her. The other
is an aging actor whose marriage is only
together for the sake of his children.
Very different circumstances and stations
in life yet they are drawn together for
reasons that are best left to individual
interpretation.
Also
quite a few laughs to be had especially
when Murray is reacting to the cultural
differences of Japanese society, which
also symbolize the differences between
he and the young woman.
A great look into the lives of two very
interesting and believable characters.
A really good film. What does he
say to her at the end of the film?
Sofia Coppola won a Best Screenplay Oscar
for her script and Lost In Translation was
also nominated for Best Actor (Murray),
Best Director (Coppola) and Best Picture.
