Monster

Based on the life of Aileen Wuornos, a prostitute who was given the death penalty for murdering several men on the highways of Florida. Theron plays Wuornos who, after beginning a relationship with a naïve lesbian, Selby (Ricci) tries to clean up her life, but her short temper history of violence pull her into the depths of a murderous life.

It is very easy to forget Charlize Theron is playing the lead in this film. Her make-up and characterization make her all but unrecognizable in the role. Easily the performance of the year. Christina Ricci, too puts in a terrific turn as Selby in the film.

Beneath the excellent performances is a raw movie that focuses greatly on the character as opposed to the obvious sexuality and brutality in the film. Written and directed well but not up to the same level as Theron's performance certainly. Although the performance was fearless and the content disturbing, I never found the film "hard to watch". But I also never felt sorry for the character, her self-destructive behavior can be blamed partly on the people in her life but ultimately it is Aileen Wuornos who decides her own fate.

Dirrected by Patty Jenkins.
