A family from small-town Pennsylvania begins the trek to New York City to visit their independent daughter as she prepares a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
The film is set-up as a comedy with many quirky characters and when April's oven fails to work she is forced to confront strangers and beg them for some roasting time. But as we learn more about the characters we find that they are in many ways tragic. April's mother, Joy (Clarkson) is anything but a joy as she complains and jokes the entire ride to NYC. Joy is also in the latter stages of breast cancer and may not have long to live. April is struggling with her independence and less than loving past relations with her family.
After much laughter and many mishaps April ultimately confides in herself to find meaning in her relationships as she passes into adulthood.
Pieces of April is a thoroughly enjoyable film on all levels. A decent script, interesting characters and several good performances make this a quality picture that was virtually ignored in theaters but deserves a look.
Patricia Clarkson was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award.
Directed by Peter Hedges.
