Ed Harris directs and stars in this telling of the life of the Modern American artist, Jackson Pollock. Pollock goes from artistic obscurity to Pop Culture icon when his famous "drip" paintings gain notoriety.
Harris gives one of the best performances of his career and one of the best performances of the year as the troubled artist. His is not the only remarkable performance in this film, however. Marcia Gay Harden is great, too as Pollock's eventual wife.
This is definitely a character study film. What is most interesting about this particular character study is Jackson Pollock doesn't come off as hero, villain, or even a tortured soul. He exists, in this film, much the same way his art exists - it just is. He just is. And that's the core of the story, for me, this must be understood before one can enjoy this movie. Without this in mind, the film could easily be interpreted as slow even though the script circumstances are not boring or overcooked.
Aside from all that, Pollock has a wonderful supporting cast, a very good script and Harris' directing proves interesting and tight.
Directoed by Ed Harris.
Harris nominated for Best Actor and Harden won an Oscar for Best Actress.
