Spider is a mentally disturbed adult; during a stay at a halfway house he recounts the tragic childhood events that shaped his mind.
A great character study role for Fiennes here. Although he rarely speaks, we are not left wondering what he is thinking or what his reactions communicate. A real nice effort from Ralph Fiennes here.
Also a really fine script and supporting cast. The pace of the film has us constantly wanting more information and that is provided with satisfaction. The excellent supporting cast members define their roles well and really prop up the whole picture. I was further impressed with Cronenberg's direction, he has a genuine feel for the story and knows how to communicate to an audience.
Spider was critically acclaimed but little seen in theaters. Fans of dark, haunting drama should really enjoy Spider and it could become a favorite.
Directed by David Cronenberg.
