A young and spoiled magazine mogul begins to doubt his senses after a disfiguring car wreck. He becomes so disillusioned that it seems he is no longer in control of his own life.
This is a remake of the Spanish language film, Open Your Eyes (which also starred Penelope Cruz). There are plenty of interesting characters here. Cameron Diaz plays an unpredictable scorned female, a role she plays with some daring. Tom Cruise plays very well the wide emotional range his character demands. Penolpe Cruz is poised and poetic as Cruise's newest love interest in the film and Jason Lee may be taking off as Hollywood's new favorite best friend, he has a sarcasm and natural earnest that suites him well here, but the role could've been written a little...well, bigger and better.
This is a film that is hard to talk about without giving too much away. Let's try by first saying this is a fairly bold effort for Hollywood and certainly a bold effort for Cameron Crowe. If you fancy a psychological, twisty-turny character study, Vanilla Sky may hit the mark for you. If you've come looking for the romantic love story, you may leave satisfied. Or maybe you're in it expecting a film comment on the voyage to self-discovery, here's the angle where it falls a bit flat. This point just gets watered down with all the emotional elements.
There are so many issues in Cruise's character that none are well defined enough to hold on to. Self worth, love, his father, his best friend and his business are all in the mix, but only his relationship with Sofia (Cruz) is given enough screen time to keep you interested in it. A film that is remarkable in some ways but less than wonderful in others.
Steven Spielberg makes a cameo.
Directed by Cameron Crowe.
