Four teenage sisters live under their heavy handed mother after the suicide of a fifth youngest sister.
Critics were mixed on this downbeat melodrama with a talky, but interesting edge. There is a nice script flow, that carries highs and lows in the story well. The biggest complaint about this film is that there's little introspection into how the girls' are feeling, we're left to guess. That may have been the point, but I was looking for a deeper study of these otherwise interesting characters.
There's plenty story to be told here but I felt I got the Cliff's Notes version of the movie. Still, it's a worthwhile film that may appeal to younger women most. Josh Hartnett, James Woods and Kathleen Turner all give very good performances.
Written & Directed by Sofia Coppola.
